Our initial process when approaching an outdoor living project is much the same as it would be for a custom home, shop or remodel project. Mountain Modern Design+Build, we believe in a collaborative design process that involves our clients every step of the way. From initial concept where we work with your goals, ideas and plans... to final close out of the construction process, we work closely with our clients to ensure their needs are met.
The framing or bones of the deck are in our opinion the most important part of the deck system. If this part of the deck project is not done right, everything else that follows will reflect that. A deck is a finished product. Unlike the framing of a home where imperfections in framing can be hidden with gypsum board or other finish applications without hindering the use, look or function of the home, a joist that is not flat and level for example, creates a bump in the deck system that composite deck boards, which are not forgiving by nature, will reflect immediately. Mountain Modern Design+Build utilizes pressure treated LVL joists and beams when installing wood framed decks, or we custom trim each pressure treated joist down prior to installation and weather proofing to ensure a uniform flat surface. This is actually an old master carpenters trick which works amazingly well.
A second option when framing the deck that works amazingly well and creates a lasting and very smooth and flat deck system is utilizing steel frame systems specific to deck framing like the product from Fortress Building Products®. While this can be a more costly method of framing a deck, it also creates a finished deck that will likely outlast most clients. And because it does not rot or decay, like even pressure treated wood eventually would do, even with the best waterproofing systems, the likelihood of being able to reuse deck framing once the deck finish has outlived its lifespan is significantly increased.
There are several ways a deck could be finished. And while we love the look of a beautiful wood deck system, this is not our area of specialization. Mountain Modern Design+Build focuses on using composite decking materials, concrete deck tile systems and fabricated wood tile systems to finish out the decks we build. We believe this fits with our sustainable direction of building. Composite decks finished with Trex®, Fiberon®. Timbertech® and even other composite decking systems provide a beautiful and sustainable deck system that when paired with a framing system that is installed correctly and waterproofed as best it can be, and utilizing materials which have be made to last, can last beyond the typical warranty period for the actual decking surface materials. Check out the Trex®, Fiberon® and Timbertech® links below. These are the composite decking materials Mountain Modern Design+Build typically works with, but there are several lines of composite decking that can be utilized.
A custom deck utilizing with DekTek Tile™ Concrete Tile Systems to enhance of finish a deck or patio system can provide a whole new take on the beauty concrete products can provide. Check out the deck system above that we utilized DekTek Tile™ concrete tiles on to provide an inlay where a fire pit was to be set. DekTek Tile™ concrete tiles are fire proof. This is just one way to utilize the DekTek Tile™ concrete tile system. These tiles can be utilized to finish out the entire deck or patio system whether it be ground based with the concrete tile set in mortar and set on existing concrete or installed like pavers. They can also use a pedestal system to create a very functional and beautiful roof top or balcony deck system. Check out our link to DekTek Tile™ Concrete Tile Systems and see what can be done with DekTek Tile™ Concrete Tile Systems for yourself.
While Mountain Modern does not focus on building decks finished with natural wood decking, we do love the look of a wood deck system. The beauty of a finely finished natural wood deck is hard to beat. The look of wood simply cannot be replicated better than by Mother Nature herself. Because we love the look of a wood deck system however, we now work with a system provide by Bison Innovative Products from there wood tile line of products. These tiles install much like the concrete tile system, however they are definitely not to be used in a paver type situation. Check out the information below and visit the link we have provided for Bison Wood Tiles.
Bison Wood Tiles are commercial-grade, constructed from sustainably harvested hardwoods, and available in standard and FSC®-Certified species. Wood species include Ipê, Cumaru, Massaranduba, Garapa, and Bamboo. These hardwoods contain a rich variety of graining and coloration, are exceptionally dense, resistant to insects, and weather well. Wood tiles are ideal for blending the warm beauty and upscale appearance of real wood with durability and low maintenance.
Our area of specialization within the realm of the Outdoor Living Environment at Mountain Modern Design+Build is the design and construction of deck systems. However, we also utilize concrete and paver systems to enhance or bring together the overall outdoor living environment and as an integrated part of that environment. Check out the picture above where we removed an existing set of concrete stair from a CBH built home, an absolutely ridiculous way to finish something out, but a requirement to gain a certificate of occupancy and sell the home. Here we designed and build a 10'x10' deck system finished with Trex® composite decking and fascia board systems, over and laminated veneer lumber structure, and integrated this system with a 30'x10' paver system to finish out the area where the owner wanted to put a future hot tub. We also finished the entire yard system as well bring in nearly 15 cubic yards of topsoil to make up for what had not been completed, however that is a story for another day.
At Mountain Modern Design+Build we strive to bring together the ideas and goals of the clients we work with and value that relationship made during the journey.
Pergolas, patio covers and sunrooms are a great addition to any backyard or outdoor living environment. Our pergola systems, patio covers and sunroom systems are all custom designed with your plans and ideas in mind.
