Post-frame (or pole-frame) construction has been used for centuries and is a leading construction style that provides an efficient way to build strong, long-lived buildings. The high heel rafter tails make for a great transition to a higher than standard insulated wall system. Standard post frame building typically utilize a post buried in a concrete column. At MD Fletcher Design+Build LLC, we design and build our post frame buildings a different way with a focus on a thermally broken, energy efficient design and construction process using an insulated concrete form foundation stem wall system on top of an oversized footing. We can then use an insulated slab on grade floor system or a wood framed floor over an insulated and finished crawl space system system. Our post frame buildings are excellent for barn-dominiums, a simple and open shop or even a stand farmhouse looking home. The simple open span nature of post frame construction leaves many possibilities to explore. Check out this great video describing post frame construction and its possibilities.
Post and beam construction is a derivative of or method similar to classic timber frame construction. Post and beam construction uses vertical structures (typically wood posts), and horizontal structures (typically wood beams), to create a framework that allows for expansive flooring and flexible interior wall structuring. As with post frame construction, a post and beam building leave a wide open space supported at the exterior walls. Metal brackets and steel plates join the timbers and hold the structure together, but they aren't always visible. In some cases, they're decorative, but in other cases, they're structural and placed out of sight. A post and beam constructed building typically has a more rustic appearance due to the large timbers which make up the structural framework of the building.
